Mawaru Penguindrum Ep05 – Missing Lyrics, TL notes, and observations

About [gg]_Mawaru_Penguindrum_-_05_[86845EF7].mkv

Stop crying about commercials in our releases. They are freakin’ amazing, and commercials pay for anime. In fact, subscribe to the Bandai Channel, buy Yamaha or Red Baron motorcycles right now, and pre-order ‘Arakawa Under the Bridge’ live-action BDs even though they suck.

And yeah, I forgot to go back and translate the insert song for ep05. I’ll post it here until we make a v2 for that episode (this will probably happen as a v2 batch after the broadcast, so don’t hold your breath.

I still intend to fill in the missing episodes in this blog as well.

ダディーズ・シューズ(Daddy’s Shoes) by A.R.B. (1981)

おやじの靴を はいてみた
I tried my daddy’s shoes on
俺には ちょっと キツイけど
It’s a bit too tight for me
They make pretty classy sounds

Stepping Slipping it’s my Daddy’s shoes

トンガリ靴を はいたまま
I wore these pointy shoes
With him out on the town
恥ずかしそうに 笑いだす
He lets out a sheepish laugh

Stepping Slipping it’s my Daddy’s shoes

そうさ これが 俺の
Yes this is my
俺らの おやじの靴さ
My daddy’s shoes
擦り切れてて キズだらけの
Chafed and damaged
Worn-out shoes

おやじの靴が ひかりだし
Daddy’s shoes are shining
今じゃ 一番 お気に入り
It’s my favorite shoes now

Dancin’ in the city

Stepping Slipping it’s my Daddy’s shoes

* I also made a boo boo for the 0:12 screen, where it should’ve been “Nerima” instead of “Gunma”, and now that I have more time to think about it, I was thinking of “alien parasite” rather than “extraterrestrial organism”, but otherwise it was fine on the translation front for this ep.

05:40 - Double-H talking in the background, their names are Hibari and Hikari.

Left: A pun on “yakimochi”, which in Japanese means both grilled rice cake and “jealous”.

Right: As someone on anidb commented – This painting is based on The Kiss by Gustav Klimt. This is the visual representation of Ringo’s ultimate ambition. However, as you can see in the next screenshot, it’s nothing but a dream. An angel (Ringo?) can only look at the happy couple in reality, as her love is doomed from the start. Could this also be a foreshadowing of her death?

Right: I absolutely love the composition with this scene where Ringo is overlooking the happy couple, the gloomy and faded background colors in contrast with happy and vivid colors in the foreground. Makes me wonder if this is a real-life rendition of the painting (Left).

Slogans to the rescue, Kanba borrowed money from a shady source in this scene. But the money’s technically clean 🙂

The slogan 「ご利用は計画的で」 is a slightly altered version of 「ご利用は計画的に」 (“Plan ahead when using our service”). This line was shortened for gg typesetting for aesthetic and understandability as “borrow responsibly”.
The slogan is actually enforced by various Japanese ad councils (depending on the medium) to be included for ads by lending institutions, much like Surgeon General Warning for cigarettes in U.S.
Kanba’s action in this episode can’t possibly be a responsible borrowing. I’m certain he will struggle to repay this debt in upcoming episodes. The price for keeping the memory and a home for their parents to return appears to be quite high.

Incredibly creepy finger movement in this scene.

Foreshadowing of the calamity?

Panchira - Yes, it's white!

Seriously, can Ringo get any awesomer? Notice Shouma’s eyes as he witnesses how badass she is. These two screenshots show her determination and perhaps even the ability to resist fate, to follow her destiny.

Dat truck.

You probably remember this whole sequence from ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica’, with Soul Gem replaced by Penguin Hat. The difference is, it keeps you on the edge of your seat despite some fishy physics with how Kanba manages to hold on. Music, direction (camera angles, pacing etc), the significance of the sequence to the story… incredible.

Chasing the old man's back.

This is my second favorite scene in this episode after the ‘Ringo overlooking Tabuki and Yuri’ scene. By not “waiting for the storm to pass”, Kanba has finally been able to protect Himari, something he couldn’t do when he was little. From the flashback scene (two screencaps before lyric in this post), we can see that he had been aspiring for, and has been chasing his father’s back since he was little. The insert song played in this sequence was perfect, portraying how Kanba has finally been able to fill his father’s shoes.

Also, notice the Penguin with “KIGA” on his father’s back. This is the same text as the sticker on the apple shown in OP. Could it just have been the name of their store or something?

Episode title.

“This is why I do that” would be a literal translation of this title. It sounds retarded, so I put a little creative spin on it since this whole episode, as you might have noticed from the perspective of flashbacks, is about Kanba. Episode 5 was a crucial character background and development episode that shows what drives Kanba to save Himari, where all his passion comes from.

And no, this is not a troll translation. It’s nearly word-for-word translation of what was actually being said.

Episode rating: 9.5/10

  1. Hey 8thsin, thanks for your work!
I’ve come to appreciate your effort ever since you’ve compared the fansubs for ano hana. It was really helpful not only because your points were valid, but also because you backed them up with your knowledge. So thanks for that.

I feel happy to be able to consciously enjoy your translations now, as I watch both Penguin Drum and Kamisama no Memo-chou by gg and UTW respectively.
However, i was a bit disappointed by this episode, since you forgot “the” at 1:59…

    Just kidding.

Edit: I had written a lot more, but since I cannot pinpoint the strange feeling I had in terms of the wording in this episode, that may have been the only mistake…

    Keep up the good work!

    • Thanks for the feedback 🙂

I’m usually not satisfied with my translations unless I spend a LOT of time on it, but that’s not very practical for speedsub groups. Most of my attention is paid to making sure everything that’s being said is translated, and make sense. I just try do my best within reasonable amount of time.

This particular episode hasn’t been QCed (because koda is busy, as you may have seen in the gg post), so we’ll probably make a lot of changes to this episode for v2 batch.

  2. God I hate this show so much. Why are you wasting your time with this shit? The art is terrible, the plot makes no sense, the characters are either bland or the most annoying piles of excrement in existence (Ringo).

    • This show is obviously not for everyone, but the general consensus is it’s one of the better shows airing this season. I gave an attempt to support that in my blog.

As for Ringo, she’s by far my favorite character in this show, even before this episode. But then again, I always find myself cheering for the underdog when it comes to anime 😀

  3. It’s awesome what a bit more translation goes towards in understanding an episode, such as the yakimochi, the song, and the subway ad. Awesome stuff, and I’m glad you’re finding the episode just as much as enjoyable as most of us. I actually didn’t think of Madoka until you mentioned it. Nice to know that speeding trucks carrying valuables always ends up with characters being TOTAL BADASSES.

That having been said, I love the setup you’ve got here on your blog. Keep up the good work!

  5. Concerning “kiga”, according to Jim Breen’s dictionary, “kiga” is an obscure term for penguin. As well as all the other things you mentioned in your first blog, but I was surprised that wasn’t one of the things you mentioned.

Also, on the side of the Good-Bye deliver truck (which put in into a fit of laughter, so much so that I had to backtrack about 30 seconds), 「いい日旅立ち」was written on the side, which after doing some searching online turns out to be the title of an old 70’s J-pop ballad. I’m not sure if the song really has any significant meaning to the series, or whether the title just happened to go along with the theme of the truck.

    • Apparently it was 1978 theme song for JNR (precursor to JR) densha operator, so maybe it’s mostly likely. The lyric is also about making a lone journey to see someone waiting for them… fits in nicely because if Kanba failed, Himari would’ve made the trip to Heaven where her parents would be waiting for her.

  6. For that last bit of swearing, you did manage to trigger a little pet peeve: ビッチ should generally be translated as “slut”, not “bitch”, even if that is the actual word loaned. “Bitch” sometimes works as a translation (and I guess in this case it does, as it is just swearing, not really meant to be taken literally), but “slut” is pretty much always a perfect match for the intended meaning of the word.

(CR’s otherwise excellent translation of Panty&Stocking drove me nuts with that one.)

    • I prefer implementing the original Japanese-English whenever possible.
I did add “-ass” here to make it flow, and ended with “whore”, which maintains the meaning.

  7. I find Pindrum exceptional
I’m glad i didnt give up on it after the sweatdropping, seemingly-excesive randomness in the first episode
This is a clever little show, quite special
It gives off the same vibe as Kuchu-buranko
Something out of the ordinary that maes you think at least a bit

It makes me wonder if Himari’s father didnt also have something to do with the company and perhaps borrowed something (for which they payed a heavy price) or made a huge sacrifice to try to give Himawari more time to live…
The symbol on his back bothers me quite a bit
Especially after seeing the symbol on the paper envelope Kanbas money was in, it makes me wonder how and to what extend everything is connected

A~ this series is truly an exciting one >u<

    • Kuuchuu Buranko is in my list of anime to watch. I heard it’s pretty good, but haven’t had the time to check it out yet lol.

It’s kind of weird how there’s penguins symbols everywhere, from the skunk’s back to billboards found in every episode. Maybe we’ll eventually find out what they mean.

  8. >>>Right: As someone on anidb commented – This painting is based on The Kiss by Gustav Klimt.

I just saw this as a parody of the anime “Elfen Lied”, didn’t really read anything too deep into it.
